Elizabeth was born in 1812, in Knox County, Kentucky. She was the Daughter of Christina Gatliff and Grandaughter of Capt. Charles Gatliff, Revolutionary War veteran, Indian scout, pioneer explorer, Kentucky folk hero, and cohort of Daniel Boon. On the 26th of November, 1829, she married James Hart in Whitley County, Kentucky and the following Spring, on horseback, they set out for Illinois. They stopped for awhile in Fountain County, Indiana where her first son, John was born, then settled in Florence Township in 1836. Their second son was born there, and was one of the first white children born in the county. Altogether James and Elizabeth raised eleven children, seven boys and four girls.Five of the boys served with the 46th Illinois Infantry and came home without major injury. Elizabeth was well thought of by her children and her friends. She died 27 April, 1850.
